Hey guys,
I hope you're all well. I've just finished my Journalism course, (exam wise anyway) I'm just waiting on results. Ahhhhh.. As a wee treat to myself and much to Scott's dismay I bought myself the rest of Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan books, including the newest one.
Thought I might as well as I loved The Kill which is the 5th book in the series, if memory serves me right and I got so invested in the characters I just had to know more about them.
Beginning with The Burning which is roughly about a nasty serial killer targeting young women. His trademark is the fact he then burns his victims making identifying them and him more difficult. The 'first' one we come across as a live crime scene is one that they are not sure if this victim was murdered by the Burning Man.
This leads Maeve down a different route trying to discover if this victim is one of the serial killers victims OR if its an entirely different case entirely. In this book we see the birth of Maeve's relationship with Rob and the introduction of Chris Swain.
Swain becomes an underlying threat (with good reason) throughout the books until he is finally dealt with in After The Fire.
The books move through different and horrible cases but gives us an insight into different characters introduced along the way. We get to know everyone rather than just the protagonist.
The most interesting relationships (to me) are Maeve and Rob, Maeve and Josh and Josh and the upper level detectives, mainly Godly. Casey describes these characters and their relationships in such a way that you actually feel like you know them. Some smaller characters appear so frequently that you're getting a picture of the entire Met family rather than just a glimpse.
*Friendly spoiler alert*
There is a hint that Josh and Maeve might get together, but I'm totally team Rob. Yeah he was a bit of a shit, OK OK a total shit!! But you know what Josh and her would not work I think because a) one would have to leave the team b) Josh and Maeve just fight all the time and it's very confusing as to what he actually thinks of her. Mainly because he's a man and feelings aren't freely expressed in any shape or form. But Rob is mostly open and honest about how he feels and I get the feeling Maeve really loves him. Pahhh men! He needs to come back and at least have it out with her!!
But anyway; these books are gripping, you will fly through them as you can't put them down and you'll be left wanting more!! The story is fantastic and gives a proper insight into the Met Police and as also a woman who fears commitment I can totally empathise with Maeve and her relationship woes.
Buy/loan the books and let me know what you think.
I know you'll love them!!
