Hey guys,
I bought these books last summer, started the first one 'Dangerous Lady' but never finished them both until now. Must be something about crime novels on sunny days, can't seem to do it. The beautiful weather whispers about hope, love and wonderful things, not violence or drugs. However this is exactly what these novels give, and they were impossible to put down.
Cole has an insight into the crime world that is frightening, she describes bursts of violence that are horrifying and physically make you cringe away from them. The lead character Maura is probably the most pitiable, we can understand why she's as ruthless as she is. Her story begins with the murder of her brother, loses the love of her life and then the brutal event that renders her unable to have children. What's even more heartbreaking is, all she ever wanted was to get married and have children.
These books showed me the inner workings of a strip club, a drug running scheme, bank heists and corruption within the church. Maura's mother was deeply involved with the church, she lived and breathed for it and her children, however her association with the church seems to be more to do with keeping up appearances. She dishes out judgement on her son's business but is happy to take the money, the 'Queen of Hypocrites'.
They really opened my eyes up to another way of life, I was raised to know right from wrong and never realised that dodgy dealings went further than my iPod getting stolen or downloading music online. The things that Cole describes are shocking, events that people shy away from and pretend they don't happen. The Ryan's start off in something small but power goes to their head and the next thing they know their one of the most powerful families in England and they literally have to watch their backs as one things for sure, there is many people after them.
All in all, Martina Cole is a FANTASTIC novelist and may have converted this innocent, romance loving girl that maybe there's more to literature than happy endings and twists that you can predict the endings off. Well worth a read guys!
