Hey guys,
for you all who don't like change, here's a book review! I have to say I really liked this book and can prove it by saying I read it all in one whole day!
It's quirky novel about love, hard decisions, glamour and complex relationships. It explores relationships between birth parents, adoptive parents, lovers, sisters, friends, the whole she-bang!
My favourite insight is probably the family dynamics. I'm from your typical two parent family with one sister and brother so I find it so fascinating how the family bond is tested when Kirby goes in search of her birth parents.
Her birth father didn't know that she existed until she rocked up on his doorstep, Marian (birth mum) kept the secret between herself and her mum for 18 years. Not telling her own father or the babies father. This prove problematic for Marian, as she has a steady relationship and friends in New York who know nothing of her past. So when Kirby wants to know who her father is, the secret comes tumbling out. And we all know what they say about secrets...
Kirby herself is interesting as in the beginning we only here from Marian's point of view to how she got pregnant and her relationship with Conrad but Kirby who is so like her father, we're given an insight into how he might have felt about the relationship and how he might have dealt with the 'situation.' She's very grown up for an 18 year old (the same age as Marian when she got preggers), very into music and VERY unsure about where her life is heading.
Kirbys' love interest is Philip, who on reflection is exactly like Marian, organised, has her life together and knows exactly what she wants. History is doomed to repeat itself, although it seems to be working out for the two young ones.
This is a very interesting book which looks at important issues so I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. You'll learn something about good music if nothing else!
Enjoy guys!
